About us

We’re Richard and Laura, a family of four living and working overseas with our two children. Richard grew up in Newton Ferrers, and we had long dreamed of a summer escape where we could reconnect with the rhythms of the river and the coast.

The moment we stepped inside The Porthole, we knew it was the one — a serene, light-filled bolthole nestled in the heart of the village. It’s our base when we return each summer to trade tropical climes for cool Devon skies, and we’ve poured love into every detail so you can unwind, recharge, and fall for the quiet magic of the Yealm.
